Electric Kettle for MUJI 無印良品

October 9, 2014 by Whitney Bai

The goal of this project is to design and make a prototype model of a electric kettle for a existing brand. I chose MUJI because I admire their no branding strategy and simplistic design. I studied some of their products especially some invisibly thoughtful details. Here are some preliminary sketches in order to figure out a direction I want to go next.  Some more thumbnail sketches for a quick brain stretch. I really like the bottom right ones. Here are some […]

Vessel Model Project

September 29, 2014 by Whitney Bai

This is a form study. The goal is to create a family of three vessels, one tall and skinny, one medium in height and width, and one short and wide. The style of the vessels that I’m assigned to is “sleek”.   I started with 2D sketches. I decided that all the vessels will have straight lines from a side profile to create that sleek look. I played with the transition from different shapes of the top and bottom to make […]

The goal of this project is to make precise model using only foam core and glue based on an orthographic drawing. How to create accurate curve, how to hide glue lines and how to make beautiful edges are the key. p

Brass Steam Engine

September 10, 2014 by Whitney Bai

Probably the proudest moment of internship is having made this wonderful little beast. I made every part of it at Harvard Physics Machine Shop supervised by the very lovely Stan. I learned how to use metal milling machine and lathe, and horizontal and vertical band saw. Most importantly I got to learn the manufacture process by finishing a very complicated project. I love the end result of course, but it was the process that made my summer meaningful.

Bike Light Design

August 4, 2014 by Whitney Bai

3D printing has become more and more approachable, or relevant to ID nowadays. I don’t want to just use CAD programs for glossy renderings, or printing existing designs that have been made in some other ways just for the sake of using 3D printing. I want to explore the unique features that 3D printing offers and materialize my creativity. Summer 2014 I took an internship at Harvard to develop new 3D printers that can print multiple materials at once. For now, […]

Record Player Design in the Resurgence of Vinyl

May 19, 2014 by Whitney Bai

When I think of music today, I immediately think of iTunes, Spotify, Pandora where I can download or stream endless songs at my finger tips. To be honest, most of the time I don’t know what I’m listening, because one, I let music software picks music for me, and two, I listen to music as a background noise when I’m at the gym, or traveling or needs some distraction. I recently came across a great article on the history of […]

Hotpot Ladle—redesign food serving tool

April 15, 2014 by Whitney Bai

Hotpot is one of the most popular meals in Asia and Asian community all around the world. People gather around a pot full of simmering nutritious broth and put in carefully prepared meat, vegetables, meatballs, seafood…you name it. Then they transfer food or soup from the hotpot to their individual bowls when they are ready. It’s one of my personal favorite meals to have with my family and friends either at a restaurant, order takeout, or cook at home. Serving hotpot […]
