Europe Travel Course-Prototyping Shoe

February 3, 2016 by Whitney Bai

Jan 3-29, 2016 I went for the most fruitful and unforgettable trip across Europe. With a group of talented designers with various background, I visited fashion studios, concept stores, automotive factories, beer tours, local market, leather finish company and shoe design school. Here is a peek of what this trip looks like: Being in a new environment making me motivated to sketch more,  photography more and keep all my senses heightened at all time. I became an […]

Welcome Home Stand

December 17, 2015 by Whitney Bai

A special piece of furniture I designed inspired by my own experience. This is a welcome home stand where you can put away the things you don’t need at home into handmade leather bowls, and hang the keys or umbrella on the metal frame. Both leather and metal will document the daily usage and age beautifully.

Design Intern at Voxel8

April 28, 2015 by Whitney Bai

In summer 2014 I worked at Voxel8 as an design intern with fellow RISD student Juan Carlos. Here are some highlights of my experience and our design work. Ideation Sketches (May 27 to June 9): At this stage I am doing sketches of different concept printers. I’m not concerning about the details at this point, just the overall shape and dimension, and come up with some material suggestions. I’m working with mechanical engineers, electronic engineers and software designers, and they […]

The Lifestyle Bag

March 12, 2015 by Whitney Bai

Work in Progress… I have a bookmark folder in my browser dedicated to my online identity: google circle, facebook, twitter, linkedin…a dozen of them. I noticed a long time ago that my online communities on these websites are quite distinctive from each other—some represents my professional side as a design student, some for family and close friends, and some for public. Of course they are not completely separated. Where I choose to post certain aspect of my life depend on how […]

Bedside Table/Shelf

December 12, 2014 by Whitney Bai

I design this table with leather top and storage unit. A single unit on each own can be a small bed table or desk top stand. It can also be used vertically as a magazine rack.Or use in this direction with possibility to hold a table top.Process I start with by making a 1:3 scale model. I cut the slots using band saw. Because I designed the angle to be bent at 135 degree so the two legs can meet at […]

Beauty Marks

November 30, 2014 by Whitney Bai

Beauty industry has a new way of looking at people’s skin abnormality. Beauty marks, they call them. Flawlessness is out, perfect imperfections are in. Leather, is from skin too, and it has “imperfections”, such as fat marks, blemishes, freckles, stamps, wrinkles and scars, yet they provide outstanding carving, embossing and dyeing characteristics. Most of these imperfections are considered what make a piece of leather “unusable” and get cut off and discarded. As long as cows are getting killed by meat […]

A little Rider

November 2, 2014 by Whitney Bai

Project Brief: The goal of this project is to design a ride-on toy for 2-3 year old children. Aesthetically the little rider should have playful and fun characters with consideration of its targeted users—-no sharp edges or pointy corners, with appropriate dimension, safe, durable and easy to operate; it should also be simple and modern to fit in houses and for parents to assemble and recycle. Material wise I hope to use natural high quality material that no only safe […]
