Street Photography–Columbus, Ohio

November 29, 2012 by Whitney Bai

street photography Every time I visit a new city I always walk around and photograph. Street photography is my way of getting to know a different surroundings. This set of images were taken in Columbus Ohio during Thanksgiving break. I love how the city looked festive, artsy but remained low-key. Copyright ©2012 Whitney Yu Bai All Rights Reserved

The Ballerina IV

November 29, 2012 by Whitney Bai

The real challenge for taking this set of images for The Ballerina is to set up a studio setting in my apartment and work with a low budget DIY backdrop, reflection boards, filters and different lighting sets. The black background really helps to bring out the rainbow eye makeup inspired by the movie Black Swan. The Ballerina III

November 29, 2012 by Whitney Bai

The idea I had for this third set of images is to combine the beauty of modern city lanscape and graceful classic ballerina. The rooftop I chose is not only facing the beautiful quad but also has a unique modern industrial look. I also designed Mackenzie’s makeup and outfit to create more visual emphasis. The Ballerina II

November 29, 2012 by Whitney Bai

This is the original inspiration for the whole photography project of The Ballerina. I was  intrigued by the idea of a ballerina in her tutu dancing in the street. Mackenzie was a talented and brave model, and that vintage bookstore was a truly beautiful surprise. My personal favorite spot is the sunny reading room at the second floor. The contrast cause by the figure and background is what made this series special.  Model: Mackenzie Eisenmann Assistant: Sean Wei Copyright ©2012 Whitney Yu Bai […]

Street Photography–downtown Champaign

November 6, 2012 by Whitney Bai

Street photography is probably my favorite type of photography. I love its candidness and the wonders of  “perfect timing”. I usually bring a zoom-in lens so that I don’t have to be right in people’s face when I take pictures. But I did, once, use my 35mm for street photography to pay my respect of Vivian Maier. Because of that I had to talk to people and/or ask for permission to take pictures, which was fun too. I believe the one […]

In Remembrance of Vivian Maier

October 30, 2012 by Whitney Bai

This post is dedicated to my favorite photographer Vivian Maier. As a full-time nanny and house keeper, she was deeply interested in the world around her. Maybe because of her intense privacy and lack of confidence, Maier’s work remained undiscovered until around fifty years after her death. Her iconic work shows the richness and variety of street photography and special historic value.     Copyright ©2012 Whitney Yu Bai All Rights Reserved
