Design Intern at Voxel8

April 28, 2015 by Whitney Bai

In summer 2014 I worked at Voxel8 as an design intern with fellow RISD student Juan Carlos. Here are some highlights of my experience and our design work. Ideation Sketches (May 27 to June 9): At this stage I am doing sketches of different concept printers. I’m not concerning about the details at this point, just the overall shape and dimension, and come up with some material suggestions. I’m working with mechanical engineers, electronic engineers and software designers, and they […]

Wire Organizer—3D printed by PrintrBot

October 27, 2014 by Whitney Bai

My boyfriend and I have been wanting to have our own 3D printer and now we do! We bought the PrintrBot metal framed one and made it work after assembly! Washi tapes really help to make the print stay in place, and the rainbow pattern never hurts anyone right? The first print is a wire organizer I CAD in solidworks. It has an egg shaped bottom and some chisel shaped teeth on top. The plastic has a little bit of flexibility so […]

Electric Kettle for MUJI 無印良品

October 9, 2014 by Whitney Bai

The goal of this project is to design and make a prototype model of a electric kettle for a existing brand. I chose MUJI because I admire their no branding strategy and simplistic design. I studied some of their products especially some invisibly thoughtful details. Here are some preliminary sketches in order to figure out a direction I want to go next.  Some more thumbnail sketches for a quick brain stretch. I really like the bottom right ones. Here are some […]

Bike Light Design

August 4, 2014 by Whitney Bai

3D printing has become more and more approachable, or relevant to ID nowadays. I don’t want to just use CAD programs for glossy renderings, or printing existing designs that have been made in some other ways just for the sake of using 3D printing. I want to explore the unique features that 3D printing offers and materialize my creativity. Summer 2014 I took an internship at Harvard to develop new 3D printers that can print multiple materials at once. For now, […]

3D Printed Ice Cream

June 9, 2014 by Whitney Bai

I’m working with a 3D printer company this summer and one of the cool things comes with this job is that you get to 3D print all kinds of fun stuff! Here is an ice cream scoop on top of a waffle cone designed in Solidworks 2013, all 3D printed, using two different types of 3D printers. I spray-painted the waffle cone and brush painted the sprinkles and chocolate chips. Yep, I don’t get to eat ice cream in […]

Record Player Design in the Resurgence of Vinyl

May 19, 2014 by Whitney Bai

When I think of music today, I immediately think of iTunes, Spotify, Pandora where I can download or stream endless songs at my finger tips. To be honest, most of the time I don’t know what I’m listening, because one, I let music software picks music for me, and two, I listen to music as a background noise when I’m at the gym, or traveling or needs some distraction. I recently came across a great article on the history of […]

3D Printed Sculpture/ Ring holder

April 10, 2014 by Whitney Bai

I designed this sculpture in Solidworks. I drew several triangles in sketches on different planes and using the loft feature to create this 3D sculpture. I used 3D printer to print this miniature version and I currently use it as a ring holder.
