In summer 2014 I worked at Voxel8 as an design intern with fellow RISD student Juan Carlos.
Here are some highlights of my experience and our design work.
Ideation Sketches (May 27 to June 9):
At this stage I am doing sketches of different concept printers. I’m not concerning about the details at this point, just the overall shape and dimension, and come up with some material suggestions. I’m working with mechanical engineers, electronic engineers and software designers, and they are all giving me suggestions to help me make the printer concepts more relevant and specific. *Some sketches have the mechanical parts in them which were done by tracing the mechanical parts that designed by our mechanical engineer Carmen Graves.
3D Printing and Making Sketch Model: In this stage I’m trying to narrow down and adjust the printer design by printing parts in 3D Printers that are currently on the market and study and printing process. I’m also going to make a life-size scale model in the machine shop to allow visual examine of some of the designs.
Juan Carlos Joined me at this point. He is very talented and great to work with. We moved forward with our printer styling to a finalized product.
