My first class of my first day at RISD, my drawing instructor Utzy let us use a lot of strings to “take up space and create paths”, and then using media of our choices to “document the process.” We were told to focus more on composition and spacial dynamic rather than the physicality of the actual strings. I have definitely struggled to be true to what I see (not to over generalize the strings ) and at the same time not too concern about detailed lines.
The next step is “strings in action”, and then be finally site specific. The idea is using shapes and tones of the lines to describe the movement and space, not to draw the strings themselves (not that it was possible to draw them all).
These two drawings are my favorite from this set.
